"Marquee" and "canopy" get used interchangeably, but they're built for different jobs. Here's how to tell which one your event actually needs before you buy.
Ask five people to describe the difference between a marquee tent and a canopy, and you'll likely get five different answers. In the industry, though, the distinction is fairly practical - and knowing it can save you from buying (or renting) the wrong structure for your event.
Marquee Tents: Built for Full Enclosure
A marquee tent is a fully framed structure with walls, a peaked or high-span roof, and enough internal clearance for furniture, lighting rigs, and decor. It's designed to function like a temporary building - weatherproof, lockable if needed, and suited to events that run for several hours or across an entire day, such as weddings, conferences, and multi-day exhibitions.
Canopies: Built for Shade and Speed
A canopy is typically a lighter, open-sided structure, quicker to erect and take down, and better suited to shorter events or ones where airflow and open access matter more than full enclosure - think product demos, outdoor food stalls, or a shaded seating area at a sports event.
Questions That Settle the Decision
How long will the structure be in use? A few hours favors a canopy; a full day or overnight favors a marquee.
Do you need full weather protection? Rain-proofing and wind resistance are stronger in a properly fabricated marquee.
Is there a stage, AV equipment, or catering involved? Enclosed marquees handle cabling, lighting rigs, and climate considerations more predictably.
What's your setup and teardown window? Canopies go up and come down faster, which matters for tight venue schedules.
You Don't Always Have to Choose Just One
